One app hides several jobs
The broker provides market access and sends orders. The exchange supplies the trading system where eligible orders match. The clearing corporation calculates and manages the resulting settlement obligations.
The depository keeps securities in electronic form. India has NSDL and CDSL. You access a depository through a Depository Participant, or DP, which may be your broker or another registered provider. Your demat account identifies you as the beneficial owner.
A single business may offer both broking and DP services, and a single app may display both. That does not turn order execution and securities record-keeping into the same job.
Follow your ten shares
Tap the job you want to inspect. This is a map of responsibilities, not a literal diagram of every transfer account.
The trading app's portfolio screen is useful, but the demat transaction statement is a separate record of securities movements.
What a central counterparty changes
Counterparty risk is the risk that the other side fails to perform its obligation. A seller may not deliver shares; a buyer may not provide money. Matching their orders does not remove that possibility.
For trades it accepts for guaranteed settlement, a clearing corporation such as NSE Clearing acts as a central counterparty. Through novation, the original transaction is replaced by obligations involving the clearing corporation: it becomes the buyer to the selling member and seller to the buying member.
That is not a new buyer speculating on Bharat Foods. It is a settlement arrangement. The clearing system stands between members so every retail investor does not have to investigate every anonymous person on the other side.
Members provide margins and other collateral. Default-management arrangements and a settlement guarantee fund provide further resources under defined rules. These protections manage the risk; they do not make institutional failure mathematically impossible.
Bharat Foods falls after your purchase, but all ten shares were delivered correctly. Which risk has materialised?
Where the securities end up
Under the direct securities-payout framework, clearing corporations instruct payouts to clients' designated demat accounts, subject to the applicable process and exceptions. The depository records the movement. It is misleading to picture your settled shares as permanently sitting in your broker's own inventory.
Check the quantity and transaction, not just the app's rupee total: ten Bharat Foods shares are ten shares even when their quoted value changes. A broker balance available for trading also differs from cash already withdrawable to your bank.
If a short delivery occurs, the auction or close-out procedure from the previous lesson still matters. A settlement guarantee does not promise a replacement share can always be found immediately.
Three separate questions now become possible: Did my order trade? Did the obligation settle? Are the securities recorded in my demat account? Asking the right question is more useful than saying that the app looks wrong.
