Granthara04.04.04Marubozu and trend acceleration

Every price in Part 04 comes from an unnamed vegetable market and is a teaching example. Nothing here is a quote, a recommendation, or a record of any listed company.

04.04.04 · Marubozu and trend acceleration

PreviouslyInside and outside bars are harami and engulfing measured on range instead of body.

Nothing visited that was not kept.

The last shape in the recognition half of this Part is the simplest one there is: a board with a body and essentially nothing else. No tail below, no tail above. Every price the session reached, it was still holding when the bell went.

Not a new pattern. The slider from 04.01.04, pushed until it stops.

The shape with no shadows

A marubozu — the word means shaved or bald — is a session whose open and close sit at or effectively at the extremes of its range. The body is the whole candle; there is no meaningful wick at either end.

04.01.02 gave the two registers this collapses: a body is what the session kept, and a wick is what it visited and handed back. A marubozu is the case where the second register is empty. Nothing was reached that was not still being paid at the close.

"Effectively" is doing the usual work. Granthara's rules engine allows each shadow up to 5% of the range before it stops using the name — another chosen line, like every threshold in this Part.

Push the last bid to the end

The first bid already sits at the session's low. Drag the last bid up and watch the upper wick disappear.

This is the same slider you met in 04.01.04 and again in 04.02.01. It has one stop left.

The slider has been the whole Part

Look at what that one control has now produced. In the middle of its travel it gives a board with no special name at all. Pushed towards one end it becomes a long candle — 04.02.01's momentum shape. Pushed all the way, with the open already at the other extreme, it becomes a marubozu.

Those are not three patterns. They are three readings of the single measurement 04.01.04 introduced: where the last bid finished inside the range. A marubozu is that measurement at 100% with the open at 0%.

This is the last time the slider appears, and it is worth saying what it has cost to learn. One number, and most of the recognition half of Part 04 is a vocabulary for regions of it. The catalogue was never as large as its list of names.

A marubozu is the close-location metric at its limit: nothing visited was given back.

Acceleration, and the word to be careful with

A marubozu in the middle of a run is often described as the move accelerating, and as a description of consecutive boards that is checkable: the bodies grew, the shadows shrank, each session kept more of what it reached.

Two cautions, both of them old friends by now. Acceleration is relative — 04.01.03's rule — so it means bigger than the sessions beside it and nothing more absolute than that. And a marubozu is exactly the shape 04.02.05 warned about: the same board is read as a move gathering pace or as a move exhausting itself, and the difference is where it sits, which is not on it.

So the honest reading of a shaved board is the plain one. The session opened at one extreme and closed at the other. That is unusual, it is precise, and it is all of it.

Why is a marubozu not a separate pattern from a momentum candle?

Try it

What does a marubozu record?

The session opened at or very near its lowest price
The session closed at or very near its highest
Nothing the session reached was given back
Buyers were in complete control all day
The price rose steadily from open to close
The move is accelerating

Lakshmi, on the one board she remembers best"It opened at the bottom and closed at the top and never looked back. It did the same thing the next day, and then it did the opposite for a week."

That completes the recognition half of Part 04: one period, four numbers, one measurement with names for its regions, and a handful of relationships that all turned out to be containment. What remains is the harder half — what any of it is worth.

Remember

A marubozu is the close-location measurement at its limit — open at one extreme, close at the other, nothing visited that was not kept — which makes it the end point of the same scale that gave the momentum candle its name rather than a pattern of its own.

Everything this chapter has told you, in order

  1. 04.04.01Three candles in the same direction blend into one: a single move seen closer up.
  2. 04.04.02Some patterns are artefacts of the timeframe you chose.
  3. 04.04.03Four names, one relationship, two measuring sticks.
  4. 04.04.04Not a new pattern — the measurement from 04.01.04 at its limit.
